Casino and Gambling Superstitions

Lucky horseshoe

There are a number of well-known superstitions covering almost every aspect of life (and death) such as breaking a mirror will bring seven years bad luck or a black cat crossing your path will bring bad luck.

When it comes to gambling there are also a number of superstitions that players have and these cover everything from choosing casino games to etiquette and so much more.

Here we have a look at some of the weird and wonderful beliefs, superstitions and rituals that casinos and gamblers across the world adhere to both avoid bad luck and encourage good luck when gambling at both land based and online casinos.

Casinos

  • Many casinos in Las Vegas do not have a 13th floor; this is largely due to the fact that the number 13 is perceived as being unlucky.
  • Slot machine payouts are usually designed around a combination of three sevens, this is due to the fact that the number 7 signifies good luck, wealth and prosperity in many cultures and religions.

Player Superstitions

  • New players that win are said to have “Beginner’s luck” and it is widely believed that people playing a game for the first time will win.
  • Some players will avoid entering casinos via the front doors because they don’t want any of the losers leaving the casino’s bad luck to rub off on them as they enter. Very superstitious gamblers will always enter a casino by the lesser used side entrances.
  • Lucky Charms like horseshoes, rabbit’s feet or a supposedly lucky piece of clothing or jewellery are carried or worn by the player and are believed to bring good luck and increase chances of winning.
  • Certain actions are also believed to bring good luck like blowing on or rubbing the dice before rolling them in the game of craps, crossing fingers, sitting cross-legged, repeatedly picking up playing cards in the same way and stacking chips neatly.
  • Asian gamblers believe that the colour red is lucky and often wear it to bring good luck and avoid a variety of hotel room numbers when booking their casinos stays in order to avoid bad luck.
  • Many gambler’s also believe that counting money while gambling can bring bad luck, as can touching someone else’s chips and these should be avoided at all costs.
  • Singing and whistling while gambling are also to be avoided if you want to win.

These are just a few of the common casino superstitions and rituals that players believe even if some do seem a little illogical; it seems that they are here to stay and as long as they are not controlling you or someone you know, they can add a little fun to your game play.

UK Plans to Tax Remote Gambling Will Proceed

UK 2012 Budget

British Chancellor George Osborne recently confirmed that the UK will move ahead with planned taxation of remote gambling. He stated that online gambling is defined as taking place at the point of consumption and that operators accessing the UK market who are based offshore will be subject to secondary licensing and taxation. While this will take some time to implement, the move has been observed as part of Osborne’s plan to attract major UK online casino and gambling empires back to UK shores.

Additionally, Osborne announced that he would be introduction double taxation relief for online gambling from April and stated that a whopping 90% of online gambling operations offering online casino games and betting to UK citizens were located outside of the UK and that the current UK based operations were under pressure to leave, which he insisted was not a fair and sensible way to support jobs in Britain. He added that the forthcoming changes would help to create a more level playing field and protect existing jobs within the industry.

While this definitely is a move in the right direction, industry experts noted that implementation would take anything from 2 years or more and treasury budgets estimate that the impact will result in changes of £55 million in 2014-15; £240 million in 2015-16 and £270 million in 2016-17.

The Treasury document states that the current taxation regime of online gambling has led to offshore operators avoiding UK gambling taxes by remaining offshore. With a widened tax base and a more fair basis for competition between UK based and offshore online gambling operators, Budget 2012 ensures that Government will commence a tax regime whereby operators located anywhere in the world will pay gambling duties on gross profits generated from UK based clientele. This decision is in line with the actions of several other European countries.

While this may take time to come into effect, it is a very positive move for online casinos and sportsbooks based in the UK and we hope to see significant growth in these markets in future as a result.

Are Online Casinos Safer Than Land Based Ones?

Casino Security

There are many people who play at both online casinos and brick and mortar ones and then there are those who play exclusively online. For some the decision to play online is due to practical reasons like the fact that they are located at great distances from land based casinos while others choose to play online as they feel that there is less risk involved in doing so.

While brick and mortar casinos have tight, state-of-the-art security, it is not always possible to ensure that every one of their patrons is honest and casino robberies as well as more petty pickpocketing do occur, the latter is especially prevalent in crowded rooms and because most casino players carry cash or chips around in their pockets, they are easy pickings. Also, winners can be spotted and targeted when leaving the casino with their jackpot cash.

When gambling online however, you are doing so in the comfort of your own home and you can simply focus on enjoying your game without worrying about keeping an eye out for less than savoury characters with ill intent. You can also simply play online funding your account by credit card or eWallet without needing to have cash on hand. Also, should you win a considerable sum of money, the cash is transferred directly into your bank account, credit card or eWallet upon cashout without you needing to carry large sums of cash, further reducing the risk of robbery.

There is also no risk of being cheated by the dealers at the tables or by other players because every game at trustworthy online casinos is governed by a Random Number Generator (RNG) which ensures that all results are random. These results are also independantly auditedand the findings are published online on a regular basis.

This being said though, there is still a certain amount of risk involved in playing online if you are not vigilant and due to this fact, you should always ensure that you only play at reputable online casinos like Ruby Fortune Casino. This means that the online casino in question should be licensed and offer encrypted transfers and transactions to keep your data confidential, have a record of free and fair game play, are renowned for swift, hassle free payouts and are audited by an independant, reputable company on a regular basis. In order to avoid rogue operations, you should avoid any online casinos on casino review sites blacklists.

From the above it is evident that both online casinos and land based venues do carry certain amounts of risk when playing, however, all things considered, online casinos definitely seem like the safer option.
