Despite all odds, online gaming community continues to grow

January 19, 2009

Revenues generated from online gaming in China alone are expected to reach a mind-boggling $2.67 billion in 2010!

With the continually growing popularity of online games in China comes a higher addiction rate and apparently, this is a serious problem that the Chinese government is working on curbing sooner rather than later. One of the measures put in place is real-name registrations. Now Chinese players who wish to gamble online must give their real names when registering accounts. Additionally, a mandatory anti-addiction system has been put in place. This system is to be installed in the online gaming software. How it works is still unclear but the Chinese Daily Newspaper wrote an article about the system.
Despite any obstacles, online gaming continues to grow in China. In 2008, gaming revenues were reported at $1.86 billion. Extremely popular on the playing field are games like World of WarCraft but surprisingly online and casual games are running neck and neck with them so much so that local web companies are looking at attracting venture capital.

It was said that in-game advertising is a hot ticket for generating revenue. The proof is in the pudding. Companies like Shanda, one of China’s online gaming gurus, are paying special attention to in-game advertising. Demographic changes are an especially important factor to take note of, with female gamers and persons outside urban areas adding to the overall count. The more, the merrier, I always say, and that adage seems to be bearing fruit. It will be interesting to see what effects this has on Chinese society in the years to come.

The ASA strikes again - this time at Ladbrokes

January 8, 2009

Ladbrokes’ latest TV commercials received two thumbs down by the Advertising Standards Authority who claimed that the ads breed “excessive risk taking and recless behaviour”. Ladbrokes is not pleased and will appeal the decision because from their perspective, the ads were humourous and light-hearted with a message that Players don’t have to take risks anywhere else. One ad featured a man skydiving for a parachute with a pack of chips in one hand. In the other ad, a man with bacon and sausages tied around his waist was swimming with sharks. Initially the ASA argued that the ad:

  • portrayed gambling in a context of toughness or linked it to risk taking and reckless behaviour;
  • portrayed, condoned or encouraged people to gamble in a way that was socially irresponsible and could lead to financial harm;
  • exploited the susceptibilities and aspirations of vulnerable people, according to the BCAP TV Advertising Code.

The ASA later cleared the last 2 charges but maintained the first and banned the ad accordingly.

Ladbrokes is now lodging a request with the Independent Reviewer of ASA Adjudications to review the decision. While we waited for the Round 1 of the ad ban fighting match to proceed, Ladbrokes got themselves busy rebutting the ban with another humourous ad featuring a mock up of a police missing persons poster. The ad offered a £20 BONUS to the lucky Player who found the person responsible for getting the ad banned. The ad headline read in bold print “MISSING” and in smaller print below “(a funny bone)”. It described the complainant as: “Body Type: Busy. Nose: Severely out of joint. Last Seen: Throwing toys out of pram.” Ladbrokes further said that the complainant need not worry because all it (Ladbrokes) wants to do is give them a big bunch of flowers and a hug to say sorry,”

Latest News on Betonsports founder, Gary Kaplan

November 24, 2008

It’s been 18 months since the arrest of BetonSports founder, Gary Kaplan, related to illegal gambling activities. Now, it is alleged that he may have been the recipient of special treatment, as it is believed that contraband articles were being smuggled to him in the St. Louis County jail, where he was remanded. The allegations and bad press sparked a transfer to a detention facility in St. Charles county, where it is now alleged that he is monopolising the interview rooms at the facility with lengthy daily legal consultations.

Other lawyers are infuriated by the apparent disregard for the rights of the other inmates. Especially incensed by the matter is Tracy Brown, one of the St. Charles County’s public defenders. “Inevitably, the less I see my clients, the less chance I’m going to have to make a good connection with them,” Brown said. “It’s hard for them to trust me when they hardly see me,” claiming that Kaplan’s attorneys are there most of the day and sometimes into the evening.

In retaliation, Freeman Bosley Jr., one of Kaplan’s attorneys said that, “If the amount of working hours in the interview room are limited or reduced, it will greatly diminish the amount of work that we accomplish in preparation for Mr. Kaplan’s upcoming trial.”

Seems like Kaplan and his attorneys have something huge in the pipeline. To date, no trial date has been set.

Legalized Casino Gambling in Atlanta Coming Soon?

November 24, 2008

The financial troubles gripping the state of Atlanta have propelled Roger Bruce, a democratic state lawmaker in Atlanta, to push forward legislation that could open the doors of Georgia to casino gambling. The bill would in effect give cities and towns in Georgia the opportunity to yeah or nay the introduction of casino gambling in “their jurisdiction through a voter referendum”. The proceeds from taxes would be split between the cities, on board with the project, as well as the state.

Also on board for a change is Ron Fennel, Governmental affairs director for the Georgia Hotel and Lodging Association, who feels that casino gambling will increase economic revenue through the attraction of tourists to Atlanta. In 2008 Atlanta is reported to have undergone two rounds of employee layoffs as well as service cuts to combat a projected budget shortfall of almost $50 Million. Past attempts to effect this change have been refuted, however, making this an iffy situation. The majority of state lawmakers continue to rebut debates surrounding casino gambling, which they feel will increase the crime rate in Georgia. In their opinion, the introduction of legalized gambling will only increase the levels of organized crime, prostitution, and gambling addictions, one of the gateways to drug use. Additionally, a proposed constitutional amendment would have to win the approval of the Georgia General Assembly.

Considering the overall economic downturn, perhaps now voters and state lawmakers, who previously rejected legalized casino gambling attempts, may have a change of heart. After all the jackpot-sized proceeds envisioned by city council leaders and casino enthusiasts alike could significantly help the dwindling economy. The monies could be channelled into public education and/or law enforcement and, inadvertently, provide a better standard of living for everyone.

Where do they draw the line?

August 22, 2008

I’m not sure if you guys have heard of the Advertising Standards Authority. They’re the monitoring body responsible for ensuring that online gambling ads adhere to strict advertising policies. Since they were given this role last year, they have banned several ads including Paddy Power’s ‘Who says you can’t make money being short?’ and Intercasino’s Rolling Dice ads. Both feature little people presumably being exploited in different ways (Paddy Power’s ad features a little person in a limousine flaunting his money with 2 sexy ladies on either side of him and Intercasino’s ad shows 2 little people dressed as dice being rolled down a hill). Both ads were intended to appeal to the humourous nature of people but were given 2 thumbs down by the ASA and ordered to be removed from television stations.

Their latest victim is Wink Bingo, whose ad’s tagline states, “Find the appropriate moment”. The Spacebar Media produced ad features a nurse on duty in the Maternity Ward of a hospital and celebrating her Wink Bingo Jackpot win while a woman is giving birth unattended in the adjoining room. The ad was deemed “inappropriate” quite contradictory to its slogan, as it advocated gambling at work and neglecting one’s professional duties. The ASA acknowledged that they understood the purpose of the ad was to “portray a real-life situation in a humorous way” but banned it anyway as it was considered to be irresponsible.

I guess the strict advertising code for online gambling ads means that they all must follow the same theme where persons with no social life are up in the wee hours of the morning playing in front of their laptop or PC and throwing their hands in the air in victory as they win a jackpot! Can anyone say “BORING”!

While I understand that the ASA is just doing their job, I’m really scratching my head and wondering where do they draw the line? Creativity has always been the success of the online gambling advertising community but it seems to me that online gambling is being stifled in any and every which way possible.

Downtime for World’s Second Largest Poker Room

August 13, 2008

Full Tilt Poker’s pledge to to providing ”the safest, most secure online poker site” meant nothing to their thousands of Players who were sweating bullets when they realized that the renowned Poker Room experienced significant downtime for the second time in two weeks.

The downtime occurred on Tuesday shortly after 1pm EST and lasted for over 2 hours. Suprisingly, there was no Press Release or formal apology to Players as to what happened, why it happened, and when it would be fixed. The only solace for Players was the website message that read “Sorry We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties” and at least 60% of Players were placed on hold for long periods of time when they attempted to contact the Telephone Support line.

One extremely nervous Full Tilt Poker Player contacted our site because he had been hearing through the grapevine that Full Tilt may be getting too big to accommodate their even bigger Player base and he wanted some form of confirmation. He further went on to say that he was contemplating cancelling his account once they were back online especially considering the 5 hour downtime they experienced on August 5th.

It was announced that the downtime that occurred on August 5th was to facilitate scheduled maintenance but honestly who conducts maintenance during the hours when their 2nd highest grossing Player base would likely to be catching a few hands before they had to go off to work or start their day? I mean REALLY!

Let’s hope that Full Tilt gets their act together and fast because the iPoker Network is waiting in the wings to usurp its very coveted 2nd ranking position. After all, 2nd place is just shy of 1st place and that’s not too shabby by many standards.

Stay abreast of what’s happening in the online gambling community; stay tuned to our Online Casino News section.
